The concept of “beauty” is classic. It doesn’t change with seasons, years, or even decades, but does the same apply to an organization? Do hot companies stay hot and who are some of the front-runners these days? Numerous sources, such as Mashable and TechCrunch attempt to surface noteworthy businesses and describe their accomplishments, but what is the formula? What can be better than showcasing few examples? Here they are:
Dropbox – You’ve been there - you are about to buy lunch and you realize that your wallet is in your other pants. The problem is organization. You need the “magic pocket” – one place where all of your stuff lives. In this case we are talking about files. With 6 million users and counting (my estimates), Dropbox solved the mundane problem of organizing files. The reason that Dropbox is cool is because it took a very real, focused, maybe even a complex problem, and solved it. Companies that do this well are good candidates for the hot list.
SimpleGeo – These days, we don’t just want to know “what”, we also want to know “where”. Location awareness is a new, hot and a rather complex problem for application developers. SimpleGeo solves this problem by making it easy for everyone to create location-aware applications. All you need is their API key. Still in private beta, this laser-focused startup is going to become ‘THE way’ for you to make your applications location-aware. Watch them closely.
Recurly – What do you think when you hear the word “billing”. Personally, this word associates with a lot of mess in my head. I haven’t met an organization that didn’t have a lengthy list of improvements that were urgently needed in their subscription and billing infrastructure. Recurly solves this problem. Subscription billing shouldn’t complicate your business and this is exactly why Recurly is hot. It sits invisibly behind your product and integrates your services and business logic with numerous payment gateways. One less (hot) problem for you to solve!
KISSmetrics – traditional web analytics measures page views. KISSmetrics adds people to the equation. The only way to understand how to improve your funnel is to look at the wealth of information related to how people behave, in real time. KISSmetrics helps you track your entire customer lifecycle, leading to smart decisions on your part. They are hot because in most cases even small improvements to conversion can result in huge and almost instant positive revenue impact. That’s hot!
Do you see a trend? These are companies who took complex, laser-focused problems and solved them in a rather simple way. There are others on my list, including GoodData for analytics, Zendesk for customer support and few more! Your thoughts?
